Why most Muay Thai shorts run small for Western bodies — and how to find a pair that actually fits.
If you’ve trained Muay Thai for any length of time, you’ve probably lived this: you order a pair of shorts from a respected Thai brand, size up to be safe, and the “2XL” still ends up fitting someone half your size. It’s not you. It’s the sizing.
Why Muay Thai shorts run small
The gold-standard Muay Thai brands — the names you already know — are made in Thailand and sized for Thai and broader Asian frames. That’s exactly right for their core market. But the sizing baseline is simply smaller, so the conversion is brutal for Western bodies.
- A Thai “XL” often lands closer to a European medium or large.
- Waistbands and rises are cut shorter, so taller athletes get a low, tight sit.
- Size runs frequently stop before they reach genuinely large Western frames.
How to measure for the right size
Skip the guesswork and measure before you buy:
- Waist: measure around where the shorts will actually sit — high, just above the hip bone, not at your jeans line.
- Hips: measure around the widest point so the shorts clear your thighs through a kick.
- Compare those numbers to the product’s size chart in centimetres, not to another brand’s label.
Muay Thai shorts are meant to sit high with a wide, flared leg — that’s what gives your knees and kicks room to travel. A good fit looks short and open, not baggy.
Sizing Tip
Rule of thumb with Asian-made shorts: if you wear a European L, you’re often a Thai XXL — or more. Or buy from a brand that already did the conversion for you.
